The Toyota Prius according to the EPA tops the list of fuel efficient cars with a City MPG rating of 51, a full 25% better than its closest competitors, the FWD entries from Ford; the Ford Fusion Hybrid, Mercury Milan Hybrid, and the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. These cars average a respectable 41 MPG, City. The rest of the pack is in the 30-35 MPG range. Toyota was the first manufacturer to include a hybrid in their lineup when they introduced the Prius to the Japanese market back in 1997. It was made available to US buyers in 2001.
